This was a road trip built as a campaign. A Toyota Hilux, an open route through the Karoo, and the Mobile Media Mob crew documenting it in both stills and film. Two editions ran: one leaving from Johannesburg, one working the Cape stretch down Route 62.
Travel work rewards the photographer who is happy to be uncomfortable. You shoot the dust, the diner stops, the light doing something absurd over the flats at five in the afternoon. You keep the camera close, because the best frame is usually the one nobody staged.
[ROY: is “Giant Flag” the land-art project near Graaff-Reinet, or just the campaign name? One line of fact would help here. And who was the client of record, South African Tourism or Toyota?]
